本学会は、会員相互の情報交換と親睦を図り、地球電磁気学および地球惑星圏科学に関連する学術、ならびにその応用技術の進歩に寄与することを目的とします。 地球電磁気学は、世界各地での磁場の大きさや方向の観測に始まり、地球磁場の成因や永年変化、地球内部の電気伝導度の研究に発展するとともに、他方では超高層の大気から宇宙空間、さらには太陽惑星系の科学へと発展してきました。現在の地球電磁気学・地球惑星圏科学は、地球の中心核から固体地球、海洋、大気圏、電離圏、磁気圏、惑星間空間、太陽大気、太陽系諸天体、さらには太陽圏の彼方に至る広大な領域の構造と特性およびそこで発生しているさまざまな現象を、電磁気学、電磁流体力学、プラズマ物理学、光化学を主な方法として研究します。それゆえ、対象は極めて広範で多岐にわたります。世界の研究者と協力しながら研究を進めることが不可欠な分野でもあります。 当学会員による研究は、地上や海底での電磁気学的観測、地質・鉱物学的分析から、超高層大気・宇宙空間を飛ぶ人工衛星などの飛翔体による直接観測、大型レーダーや分光機器に代表される電波や光を使ったリモートセンシング、スーパーコンピュー
