Als voorloper fungeerde de Milieugroep Swalmen, die sinds 1976 vooral tot doel had de komst van de A73-Zuid tussen Venlo en Echt te voorkomen.Vertragingen en aanpassingen van de plannen hebben niet kunnen verhinderen dat de autoweg er uiteindelijk toch kwam. De MHVS zet zich al meer dan 45 jaar in voor behoud, herstel en bescherming van alles waaraan Swalmen rijk is op het gebied van natuur, landschap en cultureel erfgoed, zodat mensen zich hier thuis kunnen (blijven) voelen.
