日本赤十字社島根県支部は、他の都道府県支部が日本赤十字社の地方組織として創設された歴史を有するのとは異なり、 籠手田安定初代島根県知事の見識と県民各位の情熱によって全国で唯一「島根赤十字社」として明治２０年に創設されました。（翌年に改めて日本赤十字社の地方組織である日本赤十字社島根支部として発足）以来、県民の皆さまのご支援のもと、一刻をあらそう災害時の救護活動をはじめ、日常においては救命手当や応急手当の知識・技術を普及する講習会を実施するなど、「人間の命と健康、尊厳を守る」をスローガンに様々な活動に取り組んでいます。
