赤十字の敵味方という区別なく、国境という多様性の壁を乗り越えた「人道・博愛の精神」も人類共通言語であり、このような時代において、ますます重要となります。日本赤十字社の生みの親の一人である佐野常民は、大阪大学の原点である適塾を創設するとともに天然痘のワクチン接種を日本で初めて組織的に広めた緒方洪庵の門下生です。彼は緒方洪庵の、「人のため、世のため、道のため」や「病者に対しては、貴賤貧富を顧みることなかれ」の精神を引き継いでいます。彼は1867年に開催されたパリ万国博覧会で、国際赤十字の組織と活動を知り、「敵味方の区別なく、救う」という赤十字精神に感動しました。西南戦争で政府軍と薩摩軍ともに多数の死傷者がでるという悲惨な状況に対し、佐野は大給恒らとともに1877年に博愛社を設立しました。博愛社は1887年に日本赤十字社と改称され、現在に至っています。大阪府支部は1888年に開設され、来年2023年は開設135周年にあたります。また、2025年大阪・関西万国博覧会では、国際赤十字・赤新月運動として赤十字パビリオンの出展が予定されており、万国博覧会協会が設置する医療救護所へ医師・看護師の派遣協
