苦しんでいる人を救いたい、という「人道」の思いから始まった赤十字。その精神を受け継ぎ、日本赤十字社が創立されたのは1877年（明治10年）のこと。日本赤十字社愛知県支部は、全国47都道府県にある日本赤十字社の支部のひとつとして、1887年に名古屋委員部として誕生しました。「人道」を理念に国際救援・開発協力、災害救護、安全講習会普及、ボランティア活動、青少年赤十字活動、国際人道法普及など、さまざまな活動を行っています。これらの活動は、県民の皆様からお寄せいただいた活動資金や寄付を財源として行われています。また、県内には赤十字病院、血液センター、看護大学があり、支部同様に「人道」の実現のため、それぞれ医療事業、血液事業、看護師養成にかかる事業を行っています。そして、県内全ての地域の人々に赤十字の活動が届くよう、県内各市町村には、赤十字事業の推進を担う事務局（地区・分区）が設置されています。赤十字ボランティアをはじめとする多くの方々によって、愛知県支部の活動は支えられています。
