文化史学とは、「文化」という言葉を、人間が築き上げた営みすべてと捉えて、狭義の文化現象だけでなく、広く政治や社会・経済までを含めた歴史を追求しようとするものです。この考えは、大正４（1915）年に京都帝国大学ではじめて「日本文化史」の講義をおこなった西田直二郎に学び、その学問的方法をさらに発展させた石田一良によって提唱されました。 文化史学会は、石田が第二次世界大戦後の昭和25（1950）年7月に創立され、学会誌である『文化史学』が発刊されました。唯物史観に立脚した社会経済史が主流のなかで、この傾向に対峙するものでもあり、全国の文化史研究者の集う場として、同志社大学文学部に本拠をおいて出発したのです。 本学会のもう一つの特色は、西洋文化史、東洋文化史、日本文化史が区別なく存在し、互いに刺激し学びあおうとする姿勢を貫いていることにあります。これも石田による東西史学の学際的研究という新しい史風をつくろうとした夢によるものでありました。 これより70年余、時代の変化と共に文化史学はその重みを増してきたと思えます。文化史学に個別実証主義史学を越えた全体史を構築するという期待が寄せられていること
